Hygge is a Danish concept of coziness and comfort. Coming from a country that’s consistently ranked among the world’s happiest countries, it’s no wonder that hygge is a popular concept used in bathroom remodels and other home remodeling projects. In this blog post, bathroom and kitchen remodeling company DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southeast Florida shares a quick guide to incorporating hygge into your bathroom remodel.
What Is Hygge?
The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website explains that hygge is essentially about “taking time away from the daily rush to be together with the people you care about – or even by yourself – to relax and enjoy life’s quieter pleasures.” The concept of hygge has been widely used in product and film production design, among others.
Hygge Elements in a Bathroom
A hygge bathroom should evoke warmth and comfort the moment you step in — to use a now-common expression, your bathroom should provide a spa-like experience. Since the degree of coziness varies from person to person, a hygge bathroom can give you a greater latitude with your bathroom design. The following are some common design elements to get you started on your bathroom remodeling:
- Spa-like bathtub. The theme is relaxation, therefore the bathtub is the centerpiece of your hygge bathroom. There is no hard and fast rule on the appropriate bathtub style, but it should be large enough to accommodate you in a relaxed position, not cramped. There should be space or compartments for essential oils, candles and other items that are typically used in a spa-like environment.
- Bathroom heating. Stepping on cold bathroom tiles in the morning is about as far from cozy as it can get. If your bathroom doesn’t have underfloor heating yet, take your bathroom remodel as an opportunity to add one. Also, consider other upgrades such as heated towel bars and toilet seats.
- Mood lighting. You need a lighting plan that lets you switch to set the mood whenever you want. Consider a combination of dimmable lights and dedicated lighting fixtures, or a dedicated “spa” switch if you have a smart home system.
