There are many options for bathroom materials that you are bound to come across good ones, as well as bad. Home remodeling contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen shares a look at the bathroom materials that are best, as well as the ones you should avoid.
Flooring
Choosing the flooring material is one of the more challenging aspects of a bathroom remodel. The material needs to have good traction, and should be able to withstand years of exposure to water and steam without cracking or warping. This eliminates wood and porcelain tile as flooring materials. Carpet should likewise be avoided, as it will hold moisture, which encourages mold, mildew and bacteria growth. Instead, choose slip-resistant tile, rubber, or sheet linoleum.
Walls
Walls are more forgiving when it comes to bathroom remodel material choices, which gives you more flexibility in choosing yours. Porcelain and stone tiles are good options, thanks to their superior waterproofing and a wide variety of options. Decorative tile creates visual interest and helps avoid a “sterile bathroom” look. If you must paint the walls, do so at the parts that don’t get in contact with water from the shower. Also, avoid using wallpaper, as the moisture and steam will surely cause peeling.
Countertops
Countertops are perhaps the easiest to choose materials for, as most countertop materials are waterproof. Glass, stone and quartz all offer reliable long-term durability and waterproofing. Another benefit of these materials is that they are made of the same material through and through, which means they are hard-wearing, and there won’t be any need to paint or maintain their outer surfaces.
On the other hand, avoid tile countertops. Grout accumulates dirt fast and any type of product, from soap to makeup, can cause stains. What you want is a single-piece, low-maintenance surface. However, if you are really set on a tile countertop, choose a dark grout color to disguise grime. You will still need to regularly clean it to make sure there is minimal bacterial growth.
